Explore the Arctic with Mike Horn and Learn About Saving the Earth With a Panerai Experience

During this years SIHH we have introduced you to two different experiences that are coupled with amazing special edition watches. The first was the Panerai PAM that came with unique diving experience with the world record holder Guillaume Néry (PAM982). Next was the PAM Carbotech Submersible Marina Militare that came with a training session with the ComSubIn (PAM961), the Italian Navy Commandos. This brings us to our third and final experience and watch combination, the PAM985 Mike Horn Edition Submersible limited to 19 pieces.

This very unique special edition gives you the honor of learning about nature and how to safe guard it with the world renowned explorer Mike Horn. The experience will offer the 19 owners the opportunity to learn about the world with a few days of intensive training along with Mike among the ice floes of the Arctic. This not only gives the owner a chance to test and confront the rigors of nature, but also to become personally aware of the dangers to our ecosystem caused by the impacts of humans.

As we mentioned with the PAM00984, Panerai made a very conscious effort to build a watch that not only possesses the rugged and strong design ideals of the brand but also uses materials that were sourced in a way to have a very low impact on the earth. These materials are very unique and different to the watch world and really embrace Mike’s passion towards the Earth and all its inhabitants.

Like the PAM984, the 47mm case is made out of 80 grams of EcoTitanium which is essentially recycled titanium alloy. Officine Panerai is the first watchmaker to introduce this material into the mainstream. The biggest difference in this watch versus the previous Mike Horn edition is that the lume on the black dial Is done in very bright LED like arctic blue versus the green. This blue is the perfect color to celebrate the ties to the sea for not only Panerai but Mike Horn as well.

Another cool feature that has been taken from the LAB-ID is that the text that you see is actually etched into the sapphire crystal and not on the dial. It might be hard to see in the press pictures but you can definitely notice it in person.

The strap chosen for the PAM985 is a blue version of the ones in the other submersible made from recycled PET (Plastic). For every 3 plastic bottles recycled by Panerai they are able to create a strap for this watch. You will also see in the near future a complete line of recycled PET straps as well.

The PAM985 is powered by the in-house automatic P.9010 calibre with a three-day power reserve. If you have been following along all our other SIHH 2019 releases you will have noticed that the P.9010 has been used generously in all of the pieces.  The movement has 31 jewels, is 6mm thick, does 28,800 alternations/hour, two barrels, and features an Incabloc anti-shock device.

Helping all of that in-house movement stay put in the watch is a solid EcoTitanium case back that has been engraved with Mike Horn’s signature and inhabitants of the sea. Being that this piece is a submersible the watch is depth rated at 300M or 1000 feet.

Honestly, I really believe that regardless of I think of the three watches that were paired with these experiences, I would absolutely love in some way to be a part of each one of them. If money were no object I would probably be buying all three of them to share in the memories that these unique one of a kind experiences, it gives the owners. Sadly, money is an object so I will have to wait in the wings and enjoy it like the vast majority of you from the sidelines. Having said that, I really like this direction of giving the end user more than just a watch when they are paying a very high fee for some of them. The exclusivity is nice but the shared memories and stories that the owner of any three of these watches will be able to tell will last a lifetime. For the select few that are able to get their hands on one of these three models it truly will be a once in a lifetime moment.  I think this is only the beginning with partnerships and experiences from the brand so we will look to the future to see what could possibly be coming down the pipeline. We know that they just signed a world famous Cricketer recently, could that be the next one in store? I guess we will have to wait and see.

Suggested Retail price is going to be 39,900 Euro, the same as the other unique experience models.
